The Truth About Co-Washing: Less Foam Isn't a Fault | Steve Wynder Curly Hair
Share
I get asked this one a lot. Someone tries Refresh for the first time, waits for the big foamy lather they're used to from shampoo, and it just doesn't come. A little bit of foam, nothing more. And straight away they think something's gone wrong, or the product's faulty, or they haven't used enough.
None of that's true. Refresh is a co-wash, which is short for conditioner wash. It's a rich, creamy conditioner with a small amount of gentle cleanser mixed through it, enough to lift sweat and scalp oil, nowhere near enough to strip your curls the way a full shampoo would. That tiny bit of foam you do see is the cleanser doing exactly what it's meant to do. More foam would mean more stripping, and stripping is the last thing curly hair needs.
Where Co-Washing Fits in Your Routine
Think of your wash options as a spectrum. Full shampoo sits at one end, for reset days and thorough cleanses. Conditioner-only sits at the other end, your default for most regular wash days. A co-wash like Refresh sits in the middle, for the days when conditioner alone isn't quite enough.
That middle spot is exactly where you need something after a workout, on a stinking hot day, or on holiday when your usual wash routine goes out the window. If you exercise regularly and perspire a lot, or you're somewhere hot and your scalp gets oily fast, keeping a co-wash in your shower bag means you can feel properly clean without undoing weeks of hydration work.
How to Use Refresh
Apply a generous amount to wet hair, work it from roots to ends, and massage into the scalp for a full 60 seconds. That massage time matters more than the foam does, it's what actually shifts the build-up. Rinse thoroughly, leaving the hair feeling conditioned rather than stripped.
When Refresh Isn't the Right Call
Refresh isn't meant to replace your proper wash day. If your hair's feeling heavy, dull, or unresponsive despite a wash, that's your sign a full cleanse is due, not a sign you need to co-wash more often.
The Takeaway
Less foam is the product working as intended, not a fault. If you're active, live somewhere hot, or you're about to head off on holiday, Refresh earns its spot in your bag precisely because of what it doesn't do.
